Miley Cyrus has made no secret of the fact that she fully backs same-sex marriage and equal rights for all, which is one of the reasons why we like the slightly crazy star.
In a recent interview Miley has penned a rather wordy essay on why she decided to tattoo an equality sign on her finger, and how she received hostility from some of her former-fans who questioned her dedication to her christian faith.
The singer claims that just thinking about people not being allowed to marry the person they love makes her feel physcially sick. Miley even went on to blast the CEO of Urban Outfitters, Richard Hayne, for donating funds to the campaign of anti-gay rights politican Rick Santorum. Miley writes,
"I was shocked and disappointed that a company with such diversity would exclude such a large group of people...I can no longer bring myself to shop there...I believe every American should be allowed the same rights and civil liberties. Without legalized same-sex marriage, most of the time you cannot share the same health benefits, you are not considered next of kin and you are not granted the same securities as a heterosexual couple. How is this different than having someone sit in the back of the bus because of their skin color?"
Not all of Miley's fans were happy about the star's opinion on the subject. When Miley first tweeted the picture of her tattoo along with the tag 'all LOVE is equal', some fans tweeted some rather unsavoury responses such as, 'What happened to you? You used to be a Christian girl!'. Miley replied by saying "If you were a true Christian you would have your facts straight. Christianity is about love.". However, this response only led to a backlash of death threats and hate mail.
The singer has landed herself in deep water in recent times for posing with a cake shaped like a penis for her hunky boyfriend Liam Hemswoth's birthday, releasing music videos deemed overly provocative and being accused of smoking marijuana. However, it does seem that the singer is trying very hard to be a good role model.
Miley went on to talk about how her father Billy-Rae Cyrus is also a supporter of same sex marriage. Miley claims that dad Billy is "as Southern and straight as they come", saying that he loves all of her gay friends, and continuing to say, "If my father can do it, anyone can.".
