Simon Cowell says Will Young is “obnoxious and full of himself”

Pop Idol might be ancient history, but ten years after Will Young beat Gareth Gates to win the 2002 series, the always outspoken Simon Cowell has finally confessed that he didn’t want Will to win.

In a new documentary looking back at the impact of TV talent shows, Simon admits what we’ve known all along, he preferred Gareth and wanted to see him crowned at the Pop Idol winner,

“I still to this day can’t watch the final back because I was really, really disappointed.  I really liked Gareth and wanted him to win. I remember feeling it in my stomach, I felt sick, that’s how much it affected me, it shouldn’t but it did.” Simon says on ITV documentary The Talent Show – which airs on Saturday.

Simon has also said that he finds Will “obnoxious, full of himself.”

There are two things we have to say about this; firstly, we can’t believe Will won Pop Idol ten years ago – this makes us feel ridiculously old. And that last comment, er… Pot. Kettle. Black.

    Simon said at the time he liked Gareth more. He's always said so, and Will always played off that fact, so I'm not sure what the big deal is. Will has shown himself to be quite up himself, but the same goes for Simon. No wonder they didn't get along! It's hard to tell how things would have panned out for Will and Gareth if the final placings had been swapped. Simon had already offered both of them contracts, so that wouldn't have changed, but I wonder if Will would have got the same abuse for releasing music as a runner-up that Gareth did?

    Love him, ok so come of his songs make him sound like a wet blanket but he's got real talent. He'd have been great as a judge on The Voice. Simon can't talk, especialy when you look at some of the X Factor contestants he put through and represents.

    OK so lets be real here if Gareth had won would he still be as famous and successful as Will Young today??? No he wouldnt...will is the most memorable winner an the most successful

    he was talking about during pop idol he thought that he was obnoxious back then! anyway i love will and he is NOT obnoxious.

    Will has been amazingly successful and has a brilliant manager in Simon Fuller---no wonder Simon Cowell still feels "sick" He often doesn't spot the potential in an artist although he likes to think he does!

    Goes to show how far these shows have moved on though, none of the finalists in the first series of Pop Idol would even get through to Boot Camp now.

    He beat Gareth Gareth Gates did he HW!? And who knew Simon felt so strongly. Never thought Will was obnoxious? And HW I agree, Simon Cowell, you are not one to talk. At least he doesn't let his exes hang onto his tailcoat to stroke his ego.
