Bobby Brown broke down in tears onstage following news of ex-wife Whitney Houston's death.
The singer, who was performing with his band New Edition at the concert in Mississippi, said to the crowd: "I would like to say 'I love you, Whitney.' The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage."
According to MTV.co.uk, a family member said that he was "beyond devastated" when he heard the news and that "he wanted to tell [the family] about it before it hit the news."
The source added: "He didn't want any of us to hear about it on television."
He could hardly get the words out when he called me. He was sobbing, and by the end of the call, I was sobbing too. He's beside himself right now."
Bobby and Whitney had a troubled 14-year long marriage. Within months of tying the knot in 1992, rumours surfaced that the pair took drugs together. In 2002, Whitney told American talk show host Diane Sawyer that her and Bobby had used cocaine, cannabis and prescription drugs. In 2009, she told Oprah Winfrey about her relationship with Bobby, confessing "He was my drug". She also claimed that that he had hit her.
In late 2003, Bobby was arrested for misdemeanour battery for allegedly hitting Whitney while shouting at her. Whitney filed for divorce in 2006, and the next year she won custody of their daughter, Bobbi Kristina, who is now 18.
Despite this, the trio were still close, with the Daily Mail reporting that Bobby, Whitney and Bobbi went out for dinner in Beverly Hills as recently as last week.
