It’s been one of pop’s great mysteries: who inspired Adele’s album 21 (which has sold over 18 million copies worldwide) by breaking the singer’s heart?
Adele has dropped hints, while fans have pointed fingers and dissected lyrics in vain. Various names have been mentioned, all of them denied by the 23 year old. It seemed we would never know who Someone Like You actually was. Until now.
The man who inspired 21
In a world exclusive, heat can reveal the man behind Adele’s pain: Alex Sturrock. The 31-year-old photographer secretly dated Adele from summer 2008 until April 2009 – when she started writing 21. Adele has spoken with remarkable frankness about the affair, but has never revealed his name.
She said, “ He’s the love of my life. I wrote to get over [the] break-up.”
A friend of the photographer (who has worked for The Guardian and Vice magazine) reveals, “It was an intense period for them. They met through mutual friends while Alex was working for Vice and hit it off straight away.
"He shot her a few times and that was just it. They spent all their time together – and when they weren’t together they would ring each other constantly.”
'They’d laugh a lot together'
Alex was said to be living at Adele’s Shepherd’s Bush flat during this time, and she appointed him as her official tour photographer for her US tour in 2009.
“He went with her to the States in January and they shared hotel rooms and he was on her tour bus, all the time photographing her [the pictures were released as part of an official tour book that year].
"He went to the Grammys with her [in February] when she won her first awards – it was the start of her career kicking off outside the UK and Alex was with her every step of the way.
"He’s a very normal guy and they’d laugh a lot together, eat junk food and ignore the fact that her career was about to go stratospheric.
"Adele relied on him a lot, he was her best mate as well as her boyfriend and he was very protective ofher. He’d say no one knew her like he did.”
