It’s all over for one of Hollywood’s starriest couples. It was announced last Friday night that Katie Holmes has officially filed for divorce from Tom Cruise, her husband of five years,.
“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest,” Katie’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe confirmed to People magazine.
“Deeply saddened”
Katie filed for divorce on 28 June and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split, she is seeking sole custody of the couple’s six-year-old daughter Suri.
Tom has responded to Katie’s decision to divorce, saying via a spokesperson that he is, “deeply saddened” by Katie’s decision, “Kate has filed for divorce. Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children.”
Normal life
There’s plenty of speculation about the causes for the break up, but heat’s souces tell us that Katie was desperate for Suri to have a more normal childhood,
“Katie wants Suri to be able to have a normal life. There’s a circus which surrounds them, particularly when they are out as a family, with Tom. And Katie wants Suri to be able to grow up as normally as possible now she and Tom have split.”
Relationship history
Tom and Katie met in April 2005 and had been dating for approximately a month before Tom’s now infamous Oprah couch-jumping incident. In October 2005 they announced they were expecting their first child together, and Suri was born in April 2006. In November that year Tom and Katie married during a romantic ceremony at 15th Century castle in Italy. Katie, who was Catholic had converted to Scientology for their nuptials.
The news of Tom and Katie’s split is one of the most shocking of the year – so let’s look back at them in happier times.
