One of Hollywood’s power couples is no longer, as Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise are to divorce.
Katie’s attorney, Jonathan Wolfe confirmed the news to People magazine, saying: “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family”, adding: “Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."
TMZ understands that a pre-nup was signed, so most of the couple's shared $275 million should go back to Tom (considering he was the one who earned the most).
Tom and Katie have been married for five years and have a six-year-old daughter, Suri. They met soon after Katie split from actor Chris Klein. Tom proposed to Katie at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris almost seven years ago to the day (17 June 2005).
Katie soon became pregnant with their only child, Suri. Previously a Catholic, Katie converted to Scientology, the religion that Tom has been involved in since his teens. They married six months after Suri was born, in a Scientology ceremony a 15th Century castle in Italy.
Tom was previously married to Nicole Kidman for 11 years, and actress Mimi Rogers for just under 3 years.
He infamously jumped off of Oprah's sofa with glee when first telling the world about his relationship with the former Dawson's Creek actress, exclaiming: "I'm in love! I'm in love!"
EDIT: We have just heard that Katie filed the divorce papers. According to TMZ, Katie filed the papers in New York on 28 June, citing "irreconcilable differences".
The website is also reporting that Katie wants sole legal custody and "primary residential custody" of their daughter, Suri.
