When Elton John called Madonna a fairground stripper (and that other word we decided to not include in the headline), we thought we were going to have a substantial bitch fight on our hands. Not so.
Rather than seeing the world’s two biggest pop icon divas thrashing it out in the media, coned tit for sparkly tat - the Madonna maintained a dignified silence when Elton John went on a rant about her latest tour. That is, until now.
The Queen of Pop chose her gig in Nice, France this week to respond to Elton’s claim her career was over and that she was a, er, ‘c*nt’.
Madge dedicated her song "Masterpiece" to him, saying: "I'd like to dedicate this next song to a Mr. Elton John. I know he's a big fan of it and I know he's a big fan of mine. And you know what? I forgive him. You've gotta start somewhere."
Nice right? No. ‘Masterpiece’ is the song from Madonna's film W.E that won the Golden Globe over Elton's earlier this year.
Elton’s more raucous than usual interview with Australian broadcaster Molly Meldrum included some harsh words for Madonna. When asked about her he said: “She’s such a nightmare,” then: “Her career’s over, I can tell you that. Her tour’s been a disaster and it couldn’t happen to a bigger c*nt.”
Offering up some careers advice, he then added: “If Madonna had any common sense she would have made a record like ’Ray Of Light’ and stayed away from the dance stuff and just been a great pop singer and make great pop records, which she does brilliantly.”
But if that was a sort of compliment, he then ruined it with: “She looks like a fucking fairground stripper,” he added. Ouch.
