The cream of British talent descended upon the Olympic Stadium in Stratford last night. Everyone from the Spice Girls to Kate Moss was there, flying the flag for Great Britain.
Comedian Russell Brand was there, too. But he didn’t tell any jokes. Instead Russ brought a touch of the psychedelic to the evening. And reactions to his performance have been – how shall we put it? – mixed.
Russell rode into the arena on Pink and yellow bus. Dressed as a sort of Willy Wonka character he sang along to Wonka’s Pure Imagination before segueing into the Beatles’ I am The Walrus.
The reactions on Twitter ranged from horror to hilarity. We've picked out some of our faves...
Dave Lozo – Just when I thought I couldn't hate Russell Brand anymore than I do. I hope Gene Wilder beats you senseless if he ever gets to meet you.
Schullerinc – So proud of @rustyrockets you were amazing. Love you x
TomEnglishSport – Russell Brand singing The Beatles like Timmy Mallett reading Shakespeare
USOlympic – Russell Brand, entering as Willy Wonka, just introduced Fatboy Slim. #London2012 shakin' it down now!
JoshPorter Russell Brand is so funny!!! #ClosingCeremony
SecondCaptains – Russell Brand singing The Beatles may have just ruined the Olympics
Hackneyhaz – Had a horrible dream: Russell Brand was singing on a bus, Liam Gallagher was doing bad karaoke & Boris was dancing to the Spice Girls. Oh...
Salman Rushdie(yes, THE Salman) I'm sorry. With the best will in the world, Russell Brand is NOT the Walrus. #closingceremony
