Believed to be his first tattoo, Zayn has a yin-yang symbol on his left wrist. The Chinese image represents shadow and light and is meant to represent how opposing things balance out e.g. you can be in a squeaky clean boyband and still have tattoos!
Zayn's collarbone is decorated with Arabic writing which reads, in English: “be true to who you are” which is, coincidentally, a Jessie J lyric!
On the other side of Zayn’s chest, he has a tattoo of his grandfather’s name, Walter. To make it a bit more exotic, and to pay tribute to his half-Pakistani heritage, he’s had it done in Arabic.
We don't know if Zayn plays the lottery, but this tattoo looks a helluva lot like a retro version of the National Lottery symbol. We're sure it's more to do with good luck, instead.
To say thankyou to the thing that helped him to get where he is now, in a world-famous award-winning boyband, he got a tattoo of it on his right forearm. No, it's not a tattoo of Simon Cowell's face. It's a tattoo of a microphone!
Just below the microphone, Zayn got a tattoo of a splash. We think we see the beginnings of a full-arm sleeve here.
The tattoo-happy signer also has a playing card on his flank and a heart tattoo on his tummy to cover up a Chinese symbol which said “born lucky”. We’re not sure why he decided to cover it up, but we just about prefer the heart symbol.
That plaster on his neck is from where he'd has a silver fern leaf tattooed. It’s the official symbol of New Zealand, and also means “good luck”.
Some people suspected that the “zap!” tattoo stands for “Zayn And Perrie”, as a tribute to his girlfriend, Little Mix's Perrie Edwards. However he’s denied it's got anything to do with her, saying that it is merely an in-joke between him and the other 1D boys.
