She might seem a bolshy sort, holding her own as the only woman in Black Eyed Peas, but Fergie – real name Stacy Ferguson – was once so scared of confrontation that she turned to drugs!
She was eventually saved by a conversation with God. Confused? Well read on, fair heatworlder, for all shall be explained. Sort of.
The Black Eyed Peas singer said that she initially started taking drugs because she couldn’t’ deal with the guilt of telling her former bandmates - Wild Orchid – that she wanted to be a solo singer: “I didn’t know how to [tell them I wanted to go solo], I didn’t know how to deal with that confrontation…so I started going out and taking ecstasy and from ecstasy I went to crystal meth.”
She added: “At first, with any drug, it’s great in the beginning, then slowly your life starts to spiral down. [I was] 90 pounds at one point.”
She told Oprah on her chat show that she looked to religion to pull her through her drug struggles: “My brain had been playing a lot of tricks on me. You're kind of living in this alternate reality.
"I started getting really paranoid. So I went one day into this church and I thought that the FBI and SWAT teams were outside the church... So I had a conversation with God... and I said, 'Alright, if I go out there and the FBI and the SWAT team’s not out there, then it's the drugs and I'm stopping.'
"I went outside of the church... and there was no SWAT team, there was no FBI, just me and God. And I kept my promise. That day. That was it."
Well, if it helps you through the bad times, Fergie…we wonder what his voice sounded like?
