John Whaite, the adorable 23-year-old law student, has been crowned the winner of The Great British Bake-Off 2012.
John wowed the judges during last night's final with his sumptuous Heaven and Hell Cake. Now we’re going to wow you with some of our favourite facts about the talented baker boy…
• He’s a bit of mummy’s boy – John says that his mum, “is the most important person in my life.” Awwww
• Remember John’s impressive gingerbread Colosseum cake? He admits that he had a little bit of help with that one from his graphic designer boyfriend Paul, “he drew up a template on the computer so that was a team effort.”
• John kept the results of the show – which is filmed in advance – a secret from most of his family and friends. They only found out that John had won when they all watch the final episode together.
• John loves a homemade wholemeal loaf of bread, “For me, [it’s] the epitome of comfort,” He says on his blog. “Not only does it look and smell cosily comforting, but with the high amounts of fibre I just seem to feel as though each slice nourishes my every cell.” Mmmm, now we want homemade bread.
• He was once recognized by a Bake-Off fan while swimming lengths in a pool, “I was so surprised I nearly drowned,” he jokes. At least we hope it’s a joke.
• PR guru Max Clifford reckons that John could make £500,000 from books, TV work and products deals in the next year. Making serious dough out of dough.
• Shout out to presenters Mel and Sue! John says they were a key part of his success on the show, “I don’t think I could have done so well without them. When something goes wrong they come up and give you a cuddle or crack a joke to relieve the tension, it's like having a little friend on your shoulder.”
• John didn’t just master his baking skills on Bake-Off, “I know it seems like a disgusting cliche, I did learn so much about myself,” he admits.
• He may be the Bake-Off champ, but John still has baking ambitions, “I would love to go to Cordon Bleu in Paris or London to learn more about French cookery and patisserie.”
• Fellow finalist Brendan once revealed that John is in fact colour blind during an interview.
