Fans of Doctor Who were left stunned - and visibly shaken - when the BBC revealed that Matt Smith will be leaving the show at Christmas. And speculation has been rife (we really love the word 'rife') as to who will step into the Tardis as the 12th Doctor... but it seems as if we don't have to wait too much longer.
According to sources at Radio Times, the identity of the new Doctor is "almost certain to be announced just prior to filming", which means we'll probably find out in August.
“Suffice to say we are completely on track.”
Cue a VERY tense summer for sci fi fans then - and, no doubt, plenty more names will be thrown into the mix as to who will be screaming "geronimo!" come Christmas time. Will it be Daniel Radcliffe
? Will it be Miranda Hart? Or it could be Rory Kinnear, Domhnall Gleeson (AKA Harry Potter’s Bill Weasley), Daniel Kaluuya or Dominic Cooper
. Is it REALLY John Hurt, as suggested by the season finale?
All these names have been linked to the role. All are potential Tardis managers of the future. And all are completely based on hearsay, rumour and interpretation until we get an official announcement from the BBC.
At least we know ONE person who won't be taking over from Matt Smith; Idris Elba (who is rumoured to be taking over from Daniel Craig
as 007 in the not-so-distant future) has ruled himself out of the Doctor Who
race, saying: “I’d look silly in a bow tie.”
Oh Idris, you're CLEARLY not a true fan - the Doctor changes his look with every incarnation. Remember David Tennant
's brown overcoat and Converse trainer combo? Or Christopher Eccleston's mean leather jacket?
Whatever, fine. You don't have to do it. At least you've helped us move one step closer to unveiling the TRUE identity of Matt Smith's replacement...
