The Magna Carta…Holy Grail is an album that Jay Z has “dropped” in the past couple of weeks. It would have made much more sense if he called it “Magna Carter”, though, seeing has his surname is Carter and if Beyonce can call her entire world tour The Mrs Carter Show then SURELY Jay Z can shoutout his own name in his work, too.
And it’s all extra confusing because the ACTUAL Magna Carta is, according to Wikipedia: “the first document forced onto a King of England by a group of his subjects, the feudal barons, in an attempt to limit his powers by law and protect their privileges.”
It was basically a fusty old piece of paper (it was drawn in 1215!) telling King John that he couldn’t just behead/joust/flog any old peasant just for a lol. Life is not Game of Thrones, as we have sadly learned.
But still, Jay wanted to pay tribute to the inspiration for the name of his #1 album, so jollied down to Salisbury Cathedral to check out the old scroll.
The Very Reverend June Osbourne (no relation of Sharon and co.) told The Sun: "It was great to welcome Jay-Z to Salisbury Cathedral,"
"He was clearly moved by seeing the original Magna Carta. He was a delightful guest and we discussed the work we seek to do here to further the cause of social justice. I think it may have surprised some of our visitors.”
The rapper also took a photo of a copy of his album next to the actual Magna Carta.
