The 61st Edinburgh International Film Festival kicked off last night with the premiere of Jamie Bell's new movie Hallam Foe, directed by David Mackenzie, who did Young Adam starring Ewan McGregor. Jamie plays a troubled 17-year-old who thinks his dad (Rome's Ciaran Hinds) and stepmother (Claire Forlani) conspired to kill his mum, with whom he's obsessed. Then he runs off to Edinburgh where he meets, and starts spying on, a young woman (Sophia Myles) who looks uncannily like his dead mum. Pervy! It's a fantastic performance from Jamie, who declared himself very proud of the film, and he apologised to his mum in the audience for the graphic sex scenes. Co-star Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting) also had his mum in tow, and introduced her to heatworld. He's just finished a movie with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, Fool's Gold, so look out for that one in 2008.
