Watching The Darjeeling Limited at a press screening last night, it was hard not to notice the eerie parallels between Owen Wilson’s character and his real life. He spends the film covered in plasters and bandages, having driven his motorcycle at 50mph into a wall. When he later admits to his mother that he did this on purpose, she replies, “There are so many things we don’t know about each other, aren’t there?” This remark couldn’t be more pertinent to Owen’s own life, since his recent suicide attempt came totally out of the blue to friends and family alike. The parallels in no way undermine enjoyment of this touching, quirky comedy about three brothers (Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman) travelling on a train across India. It’s from Wes Anderson, who made The Royal Tenenbaums, and opens here on 23 November.
