Jamie Bell plays a peeping Tom who has sex with his stepmum and then with a woman who looks like his dead mother in Hallam Foe. Viggo Mortensen (pictured) plays a Russian Mafioso who fights off two knife-wielding assassins, while naked, in Eastern Promises. Both these edgy performances have just been nominated for British Independent Film Awards, where they will face a tough challenge for Best Actor from Sam Riley, who plays Ian Curtis in current indie hit Control. Their respective movies have all been nominated as Best Film, alongside And When Did You Last See Your Father? and Notes On A Scandal. Because the BAFTAs are usually dominated by American movies, the BIFAs have gradually emerged as the premier awards for British films. The ceremony will take place in London on 28 November, hosted by James Nesbitt. Go to www.bifa.org.uk for all the nominations.
