Oscar season kicked off in earnest today with the announcement of one of the most important indicators, the Golden Globe nominations. Atonement – voted the fifth best film of the year in the 2007 heat Readers’ Poll – leads the field with seven nominations, including Best Film (Drama), Director, Actor for James McAvoy, Actress for Keira Knightley and Supporting Actress for brilliant newcomer Saoirse Ronan. McAvoy is in a tough category alongside acting heavyweights Daniel Day-Lewis (Oscar favourite for There Will Be Blood), Denzel Washington, Viggo Mortensen and George Clooney. Knightley stands a better chance against Cate Blanchett, Julie Christie, Jodie Foster and Angelina Jolie. The Golden Globes will be presented on 13 January – good luck James and Keira!
