The Church of Scientology’s decision to threaten legal action against sites who refuse to take down that crazy Tom Cruise video hasn’t done much for their reputation. According to a top media lawyer, if the Scientologists hadn’t come down so hard on YouTube by issuing a strict legal letter, the whole hoo-hah would have blown over in a matter of hours – but now it’s big news across the globe. “It really is futile to try and remove the Tom Cruise copyright infringement from the internet,” says Mark Stephens from London law firm Finers Stephens Innocent. "The Scientologists, by taking action to enforce their copyrights, have made it a news story.” We’re now all baffled about why someone as high profile as Tom Cruise would agree to be interviewed about his beliefs, even if it was only meant to be seen by a few people – surely they knew someone would get hold of it? Rather than promoting Scientology as was, presumably, originally intended by the creepy clip, we’re all now more suspicious than ever about the whole thing – if they’re so determined for us not to see these videos, they must be hiding something, right?
