Cynthia Nixon has spoken out after winning an award for being a positive role model to young gay people. The Sex And The City star won the honour at the Point Foundation Awards (an American fund providing scholarships to gay students), and was praised for “living her life open”. When she accepted the award, Cynthia, who is in a long-term relationship with education activist Christine Marinoni, pictured here, said, “When you're a young gay person, you yearn for nothing so much as the presence of other gay people – most especially, an older generation of gay people who can encourage and inspire you." And she later said, "It was just a real honor to be considered a role model.” Her co-star SJP, who was in attendance along with the rest of the SATC ladies, added that “the way she lives her life is good work. She leads by example". Some of you might be thinking, “Er, this is all very well, but wasn’t Cynthia living with a bloke until about a minute ago” and you do have a point – Cynthia had two children with ex-boyfriend Danny Mozes, before coming out as a lesbian in 2003, at the ripe old age of 37. “That is part of what I look back on now as my straight period,” she joked last night.
