After we saw Mamma Mia! The Movie, we always knew it was going to do rather well at the box office. Now it’s been playing for a whole week, and the figures are in: it’s already crossed the £10million barrier – more than summer blockbusters like The Incredible Hulk have taken after weeks of release. The success puts Mamma Mia! neck and neck with Sex And The City, which also crossed the £10million barrier on its seventh day, but many cinema insiders reckon ABBA will win out over Carrie and friends in the end, beating SATC’s £26million total. Compared to other recent musicals, Mamma Mia! is well ahead of the pack: Hairspray took just over £4million in its first seven days; Chicago managed £3.6million after seven days of wide play; Dreamgirls did £1.8million over the same period. Go, Meryl!
