We all gasped when it emerged last month that Christian Bale’s mum and sister had accused the actor of assaulting them at a London hotel the night before The Dark Knight premiere – but police have now announced that he won’t face charges. “We can confirm that we have advised the Metropolitan Police Service that the actor Christian Bale should not face any charges following an incident which occurred in relation to his mother and sister at the Dorchester hotel on 21 July this year,” says a Crown Prosecution Service spokesman. “Whilst the CPS treats all incidents which take place in a domestic context seriously, it is important that the views of complainants are also taken into account when making decisions in such cases. Taking all the factors into consideration, the decision has been taken that there is insufficient evidence to afford a realistic prospect of conviction, and accordingly the police have been advised that no further action should be taken against Mr Bale.” That all sounds very official, but we think it means police basically didn’t believe mum Jenny and sister Sharon’s version of events. Christian, or Batman as we know him, was arrested two days after the alleged incident, and was questioned by detectives for several hours before being released on bail. We’re glad our favourite superhero doesn’t seem to be a villain after all…
