Do you remember months ago when Alec Baldwin was at the centre of a storm of controversy after a grumpy voicemail he left for his daughter became public? Basically, the actor called his daughter a "rude, thoughtless little pig" during the rant – which he now claims was the result of a prolonged period of frustration – and after the message was leaked on to the internet, he found himself the subject of a barrage of criticism. Now the actor has admitted that the episode upset him so much that he even considered taking his own life. "Driving up the Taconic Parkway, heading to an inn in the Berkshire Mountains, I began to think about what little town I would repair to in order to commit suicide," Alec admits in his new book, A Promise To Ourselves. He then goes on to write, "When I returned to New York, the thought of jumping out the window of my apartment was with me every night for weeks." In the book, Alec also talks about the breakdown of his marriage to Hollywood actress Kim Basinger, whom he divorced in 2002 after nine years. The couple have been battling for custody of their daughter Ireland ever since, and it was during a visit with her mum that the teenage Ireland received the voicemail. "She was off for spring break with her mother and her phone was turned off for 10 consecutive days... This had gone on for years now and... when the beep came, I snapped," the actor confesses. Alec was understandably mortified when his message was made public, and said at the time, "I have a normal relationship with my daughter. I am sorry for what happened." Poor Alec. He now claims that it was his love for his daughter that eventually stopped him from taking his own life. "I love my daughter with all my heart," he writes. God, some of the things we used to shout at our mum and vice versa during our teens were much worse than this. Mum, if you're reading, we're very sorry...
