heat was rubbing shoulders with the stars at the National Movie Awards last night, at London’s glittering (actually there was no glitter, but lots of class) Royal Festival Hall. A very giggly Kylie was there, randomly chosen to introduce the new trailer for the next James Bond film Quantum Of Solace (there seemed to be a general reluctance to actually utter that title because it’s so weird). Nicole Kidman was there, looking stunning as always, and getting a good plug for her big new movie Australia. And Mr Big himself was there – Chris Noth, representing Sex And The City, and also giving out an award. Screams from the audience almost drowned him out. Even supercool Samuel L Jackson dropped in and mingled happily with the crowd, though he did seem to have a less than cool Bluetooth device attached to one ear on the red carpet.
BUT undoubtedly the star of the night was… Meryl Streep! Who’d have thought it, but the formerly rather serious, multi-Oscar winning star of such super-serious films as Sophie’s Choice and The Hours, has transformed herself into the most fun woman in Hollywood! She bounded onto the stage to accept her award for Best Female Perf in Mamma Mia, and breathlessly giggled and bounced up and down and generally behaved like a loveable teenager, totally thrilled by the audience’s incredible excitement about ANYTHING to do with Mamma Mia! She also said the award was one in the eye for the critics. Though heat of course loved the film as soon as we saw it!
Don’t miss the show tonight on ITV1 at 8pm, and look out for some surprises (stop reading now if you haven’t heard who won what!) – like SATC NOT winning best comedy, and Johnny Depp wearing the most hideous jacket in the world ever in his video acceptance speech.
