It doesn't open in the UK until October, but we thought Pixar fans would like to know the lowdown on new movie Up, which opened the Cannes Film Festival last night, and is the first 3D feature from the animation geniuses who created Toy Story and Finding Nemo. Pixar always do something different (case in point: their last movie, WALL-E) and this time it is making the lead character a 78-year-old balloon seller. Will kids want to see it? Who cares: it's Pixar! The most creatively ambitious and brilliantly achieved segment is a dialogue-free montage showing virtually the whole of the old man's life, including – gulp – his wife's miscarriage and her death. The sequence will go down in history as the perfect montage. Old-timer Carl has never fulfilled his youthful quest for wild adventure, settling instead for a job selling balloons at a wildlife park. It's these candy-coloured tiny packets of helium he attaches to his house, floating away to South America to fulfill those childhood dreams. Up is right up there with Pixar's recent efforts, and boasts one of their funniest ever characters, Dug the dog. To check out the official trailer, just click here.
