heat’s film editor Charles Gant has returned from the Edinburgh Film Festival, where all the movies he saw seem to feature handsome men, for some
reason. Here are his favourites…
1. Harry Treadaway in Fish Tank
Harry was in town promoting this brilliant gritty London drama about a 15-year-old girl who wants to be a professional R&B dancer – Harry plays a gypsy lad who becomes her boyfriend. Fish Tank was favourite to win Best New British Feature in the festival, but lost to Moon, directed by David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones. Harry’s twin brother Luke (also an actor) was on the jury, but clearly nepotism was not at play!
2. Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna in Rudo Y Cursi
The Mexican hotties from one of our favourite ever films – Y Tu Mama Tambien – are back together playing two half-brothers who become soccer stars. Both flew to Edinburgh, and we spotted them out and about enjoying the party scene and being super-friendly. Bless!
3. Jamie Doyle in Kicks
Jamie plays a sexy Liverpool FC star who ends up falling prey to two very young obsessive female fans in this cautionary tale about today’s celebrity age. We don’t know much about Jamie, but we understand why the two girls kidnapped him and tied him to a chair.
4. Jesse Eisenberg in Adventureland
We spent a lovely half hour chatting to Jesse, who stars opposite Twilight’s Kristen Stewart in this great US indie comedy about a college kid working at a fairground one summer. If you like Michael Cera (Juno, Superbad), you’ll love Jesse in this movie.
5. Brian Geraghty in The Hurt Locker
Handsome Brian (Jarhead) plays a US soldier who is one third of a team of bomb disposal experts in this amazingly tense Iraq-set drama from Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break). He also starred in Easier With Practice, which won Best New International Feature. We asked Brian to pose for a photo with us,
and he kindly obliged.
6. Hugh Dancy in Adam
Hugh plays a man with Asperger’s who falls for his neighbour (Rose Byrne) in this sweet romantic drama, which closed the Festival on Saturday night. Hugh is currently dating Stardust’s Claire Danes (Hollywood power couple alert!), and she accompanied him to the Edinburgh premiere. With this movie and Confessions Of A Shopaholic, Hugh is emerging as a bona fide movie star at last.
7. Irlan Santos Da Silva in Only When I Dance
Irlan lives in an impoverished favela in Rio De Janeiro, but that doesn’t prevent him from his dreams of international success as a ballet dancer. This ace documentary is the Brazilian Billy Elliot and is totally inspirational. PS Irlan is hot!
8. RoxRite and Hong 10 from Turn It Loose
Another excellent dance documentary, this time about the world breakdancing championships in South Africa. B-boys RoxRite and Hong 10 came to Edinburgh to promote the film, and showed off their moves at a workshop for local kids. heat declined to participate.
