New Transformers movie reviewed!

The new edition of heat went to press before we had chance to see and review Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen. But we’ve seen it now, and thought you’d like to know that if you enjoyed watching the Autobots and Decepticons smashing each other up in the first film, then there’s plenty of that to enjoy this time. More, in fact. On the demerit side, the sequel suffers from an unnecessarily complicated plot (about an evil Decepticon called The Fallen becoming re-energised and destroying the sun, or something) which the characters spend endless minutes repeatedly explaining to each other. Really, this movie is like the exposition Olympics. Embarrassingly, despite all this guidance, we were still unable to follow it at various points, much less care about it – but if we watched it repeatedly on DVD, as the film is intended to be viewed, we’d probably get there. The attempts at humour provide welcome tonal balance, even if they seem mostly to involve dogs shagging and Shia LaBeouf’s mum getting stoned on hash brownies. We didn’t stay for the song credits, but the soundtrack reminded us of classic '80s action flicks from the Simpson Bruckheimer stable – if that was a deliberate ploy on director Michael Bay’s part, is making us nostalgic for those movies really a good idea?
