The revelation of Michael Jackson: This Is It, which we saw last night at the ungodly hour of 1am at the London premiere, is that, despite all the rumours about his state of mind and body and his general weirdness, Jacko, aged 50, was definitely more than capable of staging a brilliant live show. We came away from the screening in no doubt whatsoever that the O2 live shows would have been regarded as a spectacular and triumphant comeback. Jackson is in amazing voice throughout – particularly on classics like Human Nature and I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, while his dancing is as spectacular as ever. Sure, he’s skinny, but not shockingly so, and he’s certainly in good enough physical shape for some spectacularly vigorous routines. And he’s clearly holding something back for what would have been the actual shows. After a stunning performance of Billie Jean, he says, “At least we got a feel for it…” Well, this revelatory documentary gives us more than just a feel of how brilliant Jacko still was as a performer, a mere matter of days before his death. No one even vaguely keen on Michael Jackson should miss it.
