Golden Globes fever is still lingering like the beautiful smell of Ryan Gosling after he leaves a room (or so we would imagine). One of the big films of the night was George Clooney’s new comedy-drama The Descendants, winning Best Picture: Drama, with Clooney himself scooping Best Actor. He was also awarded Best Dressed Foxiest Silver Fox. By us. Just now.
Don’t be fooled by the tag ‘comedy-drama’ though – those folks at the Globes were definitely right to label it the latter. Clooney plays a disinterested husband who has to rush back to Hawaii when his wife falls into a coma after a boating accident. See, we warned you, not very funny so far. He is then told by her doctors that she isn’t going to wake up, which is around the same time he also finds out that she was having an affair with some guy down the road. Still not very funny, yet.
Things DO improve on the LOLs-side though, largely thanks to some hilaire running in floppy shoes by Clooney and a slightly slow friend of his daughter, called Sid. With more awkward moments than when Harry Styles’ mum met Caroline Flack, expect to cringe as much as you cry and laugh.
After last night’s success, The Descendants looks set to do just as well at The Oscars in February. Our advice? If you want to participate in cultural movie-chat without the serious silence of The Artist, grab some popcorn, head down the cinema and ogle Clooney instead. After all, if it’s nominated for an Oscar, it definitely classes as intellectual ogling.
