Hollywood, brace yourselves! This Sunday will mark the third time that Ricky Gervais hosts the Golden Globes – and the comic has promised that once again the A-list will be the butt of his jokes.
Worried Golden Globe bosses are planning to air the ceremony with a seven-second time delay, so that they’re able to censor Ricky if his material is too insulting (boo, no fun). Taking a look back at some of the comic’s most cutting Globes comments, we can see what they’re worried…
“My lawyers helped with that joke”
At the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, Ricky decided that he wouldn’t hold back when referencing a certain movie megastar, "Also not nominated, I Love You Phillip Morris. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. So the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then. My lawyers helped with that joke."
Hmm… We wonder who Ricky could possibly be talking about?!
“Just don't look at it when you touch it”
He then went on to jab Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner, "Talking of the walking dead, congratulations to Hugh Hefner, who is getting married at age 84 to 24-year-old beauty Crystal Harris. When asked why she was marrying him, she said, 'He lied about his age. He told me he was 94'. Just don't look at it when you touch it." Wow. These remarks still sting even now!
Airbrush
Ricky even took a swipe at our favourite New York ladies from Sex and the City 2, "I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster. Girls, we know how old you are. I saw one of you in an episode of Bonanza." We wonder what Kim Cattrall, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis thought of these remarks?!
Surgery face
He was no different way back at the 2010 Golden Globe Awards, opening the show with the now infamous comment, "Just looking at all the faces here reminds me of some of the great work that was done this year . . . by cosmetic surgeons"
Uh-oh Angelina
Ricky went on to insult Angelina Jolie, "Actors are loved the world over. You could be in the third world and you could see a glimpse of a Hollywood star and it would make you feel better. You could be a little Asian child with no possessions and no money and you could see a picture of Angelina Jolie and think… 'mummy'”. We’re sure Ange wasn’t exactly thrilled with Ricky over these comments!
McCartney madness
“I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson” – The next man on the stage was Mel Gibson… Ouch! But more 100% pure comedy gold from Gervais. Topically he also commented on the recent divorce of Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills, "I was up front in first class and (Paul McCartney) was behind me in coach. Saving money. He spent a lot last year."
After all the rumours of Ricky being banned from the Golden Globe Awards following the past two years of brutally honest put-downs, he will be defying all his critics when he arrives this Sunday to host the 69th annual award show. Good luck Ricky, we salute you.
