Today, the biggest names in showbiz will gather in Los Angeles for the biggest awards show on the planet – The Oscars. We’re actually quivering in anticipation at the thought of all the dresses, but before that, it’s time to speculate…
Who’ll be going home with a coveted golden Oscar statuette and who’ll be forced put on their best ‘I-don’t-care-about-winning’ grin for the camera when they lose out? We’ve decided to take a look at the hot favourites in the biggest categories, Best Film, Best Actress and Best Actor.
Best Film
The Artist swept the board at the BAFTAs, and it’s the hot favourite to triumph at the 2012 Oscars, too. The Artist also found glory at The Golden Globes back in January in the Best Picture: Musical or Comedy category, but Globes divide their awards by genre, also giving a nod to George Clooney’s family drama The Descendants which won Best Picture: Drama.
So, what are the bookies saying? According to Paddy Power the makers of The Artist need to clear some more space on their collective mantle piece
The Artist 1/16
The Descendants 10/1
Hugo 25/1
The Help 25/1
War Horse 50/1
Midnight In Paris 80/1
Moneyball 100/1
Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close 100/1
The Tree Of Life 100/1
Best Actress

Another two horse race – if you believe the bookies. Meryl Streep won out at the BAFTAs and The Golden Globes (Best Actress: Drama), but the wonderful Viola Davis in The Help is inching ahead in the betting odds. Meryl would love to see her friend win it, and so would we. But do you think there could be a surprise on the night?
Viola Davis (The Help) 4/7
Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) 11/10
Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn) 22/1
Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs) 33/1
Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) 66/1
Best Actor

BFFs at war! It’s George Clooney vs Brad Pitt… actually we don’t really fancy Brad’s chances of winning Best Actor (nor do the bookies), but Swoony Clooney is in with a shot for picking up his first Oscar in a leading role (he won Best Supporting Actor for Syriana in 2006). The Artists’ leading man – the charming Jean Dujardin – is a good tip to win (it looks like nothing’s gonna stop The Artist from sweeping the board), while our own Gary Oldman looks to out of luck.
Jean Dujardin (The Artist) 4/7
George Clooney (The Descendants) 5/4
Gary Oldman (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) 20/1
Brad Pitt (Moneyball) 25/1
Demian Bichir (A Better Life) 50/1
