So, this morning we revealed that the charts will soon be resembling a high-glamour version of the Topshop changing rooms at 3pm on a Saturday, as Britney, Christina, Leona and Beyonce all release singles on the same day. The four ladies have sold approximately 378 billion-million-zillion records between them in the past (we counted) – but who’ll come out on top this time, when their singles hit the shops on 3 November? Well, the smart money’s on Britney – HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo reckons her big comeback single Womanizer is likely-ish to pip the others to the post. “We haven’t had a heavyweight chart battle like this for a while,” he says. “It’s wide open but you have to fancy Britney, perhaps just ahead of Leona.” Let’s look at the facts – Britney’s Womanizer is definitely the most talked about of the four songs – and it has a steamy video (when heatworld took its bi-annual trip to the gym the other day, every man in the room suddenly stopped their sweaty grunting to gaze at Britters when the video came on…and probably did an altogether different kind of sweaty grunting when they got home). Britney's old rival Christina, on the other hand, is releasing a track called Keeps Gettin’ Better – it's the title track from her Greatest tits Hits collection – and she’s certainly been doing lots of promotion for it, parading around in a succession of skimpy outfits. Beyonce can’t be ruled out either – her quirky ballad, If I Were A Boy, is a bit of a departure for her, and could draw in a few new fans. And finally, our very own Leona is, amazingly, the biggest-selling artist of the year in the US, and her single, Forgive Me, is more up-tempo than her usual fare. Plus, with The X Factor fever in the air, she might be on people’s minds. So, who are you backing in the big race for the top?
