Chris pleads not guilty
Rapper Chris Brown has pleaded not guilty to threatening and assaulting his on/off girlfriend Rihanna. Appearing in a Los Angeles court with his lawyer Mark Geragos, he simply spoke to enter his plea. Dressed all in black, Chris was watched by his mother who is said to have looked upset. Chris Brown was charged in March for assault likely to cause great bodily injury and making criminal threats. The victim, Rihanna – real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty – was represented by lawyer Donald Etra, who said after the hearing that she was in "fine spirits" and that she is hoping a deal can be worked out before a preliminary hearing or trial, but that she would testify if necessary, adding, "She would be pleased if this was over quickly." If sentenced, Brown could serve nearly five years in prison or on probation. Although it has never been confirmed, it is thought that Rihanna and Chris have split up since the incident. Brown's career has been undoubtedly on the slide since with sponsors not supporting him anymore, some radio station refusing to play his music. Some broadcasters have even started playing an anti-Chris Brown song, created by the little-known dance group Smoke Jumpers. Chris is due back in court on 29 April to hear the verdict.
