Do we really want THIS to be the Christmas Number One?

Posted by heatworld 09 December 2009 10:29

We all know that Christmas is just another day, so why do we always get our Santa-patterened pants in such a twist over which song will be Number One that week? Traditionally, over the past few years, the X Factor winner has always had the honour, but this year's there's been a revolt – and now there's a real chance that Rage Against The Machine's 1993 hit Killing In The Name will creep into the lead. Music fans have started a Facebook campaign to get the not-exactly-festive hit to the Number One spot – and over 400,000 people have already signed. Now bookies have been forced to admit that Rage Against The Machine have overtaken artists such as Leona Lewis, Robbie Williams and Susan Boyle to become the second most likely to be Number One this Christmas. With lyrics that will turn your nan's ears blue, we're struggling to imagine Killing In The Name being joyfully played on the radio while we prepare the Christmas turkey...but it would be pretty funny, wouldn't it? Have a listen to the song (if you don't mind explicit lyrics) and tell us what you think. Should RATM steal the Christmas Number One from the X Factor winner, or does the very idea of such a thing fill you with fury?

I'm amazed 'real music fans' like RATM fans give a toss about the charts and X-Mas number one...

I'd love a 2 finger salute to Mr Cowell on Christmas Day but I don't want RATM trivialised in some joke at his expense. Its an awesome song but the refrain 'f**k you I wont do what you tell me' seems ironic when people are protesting you do what they tell you and buy it?! Would snigger if it did get to no 1 tho!

The whole point of the Rage campaign is to shout out against manufactured cr@p dominating the charts. I happen to love Rage, but any song would do which is original and from the heart. The choice of Killing in the Name as the focus for this protest I think is great as it's just so hilariously inappropriate as a Xmas number 1. C'mon...fight for the tradition of British eccentricity...buy the sh1t out of it and make Simon Cowell look like the tw@t he really is.

I would rather this than X Factor AGAIN! in other news, LA Parody rockers Steel Panther are releasing an Xmas single on the 13th called Sexy Santa, which is what gets my vote for no1!

Its easy for people to sit behind a computer and rant saying its not right that an artist that produces something other than pop be number one on Christmas Day. But thats just not the case as Rock band Iron Maiden has had a Christmas number one in the last 15 years. With a Song Called "Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter". For those who are know what Rage against the Machine are about and their anti capitalist stances it makes perfect sense that their music be used simply to send a message that we as people wont stand for all the rubbish that gets put out and passed off as so called "music". Even if you dont like the song thats ok. its just simply a message of Power to the People and showing that we do have a say in the music industry.
