Well, it’s been a long battle once more to see who would secure the coveted spot of Christmas number one in the charts this year!
Ever since Rage Against The Machine’s single Killing In The Name Of pipped former X Factor winner Joe McElderry to the top spot, the fight for number one has become a lot more vigorous. A Facebook campaign marked the start of the Christmas number one take-over, as X Factor haters wanted to regain the spot with a song that wasn’t spawned from the popular show.
Well, this time around the contenders were Little Mix with Cannonball, the Chris Moyles show were backing Lou Monte’s Dominick the Donkey, Coldplay entered Paradise and Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. However, the winner of Christmas number 1, 2011 goes to The Military Wives Choir with their single, Wherever You Are!
As predicted earlier this week, the choir stormed to the top of the charts and at one point were outselling Little Mix by 100 to 1. Gareth Malone helped to form and guide the choir to chart success, the choir that brought together wives, partners and girlfriends of serving members of the armed forces. Gareth tweeted,
‘Congratulations ladies. You did it/ Be very very proud. Gxxxx’
Procceds from the single will go towards charities SSAFA Forces Help (the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) and the Royal British Legion. Congratulations ladies!
