EastEnders beats Downtown Abbey in Christmas Day ratings

Posted by 26 December 2011 18:35

We don’t know about you, but heatworld spent yesterday muching through our own bodyweight in Christmas dinner and watching Christmas day telly.

The big TV battle of the day was between BBC1’s EastEnders and ITV1’s Downton Abbey – both of which screened at 9pm yesterday.

SPOILER ALERT!

There was high drama in Albert Square, as Ben was revealed as Phil’s stalker and Yusef prepared to set fire to the B&B. Over on Downton Abbey’s festive Special Bates was found guilty of murdering his ex-wife, and Lady Mary finally got rid of creepy old Sir Richard and found herself in the arms of Matthew! Hoorah!

A peek audience of 9.92million viewers turned into ‘Enders, with 700k catching up on BBC Three at 11.05pm. Downton Abbey attracted an audience of 8.13million viewers from 9pm, with a further 433k catching up on ITV1+1.

Absolutely Fabulous made it’s return to TV with a peak of 7.43million viwers, while the Beeb also scored big with the Narnia-themed episode of Doctor Who and 7.25million tuned in to see Charlie Brooks’ and Vincent Simone lift the Christmas Strictly Come Dancing glitterball trophy.

What’s been YOUR festive TV highlight this year?

They need to bring back Paul Nicholls as shirtless Joe with the tinfoil. That's the only way I'd ever watch miserable Eastenders.

Why anyone wants to watch soaps on Christmas Day is beyond me. I watched Dr Who yesterday, v glad I did as it was beyond depressing (it was a snowy wood - Narnia reference ends there). Why not try making a cheery episode, it's Christmas ffs... Ab Fab was fun tho.

Loved Downton, and have Eastenders on my sky + along with a hundred other things I've missed over Christmas. The titanic trailer left me a little underwhelmed though, thought it would be better

eastenders was epic!! The woman who plays Zaineb should get best actress instead of that pesky Jessie Wallace

Goes to show that people clearly like to be depressed on Xmas day. Downton was superb
