Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony must have been one of the best nights of Kate Winslet’s life – she achieved her childhood dream of winning an Oscar and, on a more shallow level, most fashion critics adored her asymmetric YSL dress. However, it seems the harshest critics are a little closer to home for Kate – she’s revealed that her eight-year-old daughter Mia was appalled by her mum’s choice of attire. Kate phoned Mia backstage shortly after winning her awards and asked if she’d jumped up and down when she saw Kate’s victory on TV. “Mia says: 'Yes, I did, Mum’,” explains Kate. “’I did, but I need to talk to you about the dress – it was grey.' She was absolutely mortified I wore a grey dress.” Still, even though the most important little lady in her life didn’t approve, Kate’s glad she went for that particular frock. “I think in this time in the economy, it's just not nice to have people make lots of dresses and you just wear one out of a possible five,” she says. “So Yves St Laurent very kindly said, 'We'd like to make something for you,' and that was what we did.” We think Kate looked pretty amazing – but maybe you’re on Mia’s side with this one…
