It’s become an all-too regular occurrence for Coleen Rooney, waking up to find out that husband Wayne has been up to no good – and last week was no exception. Following a night out, pictures emerged of the former England football captain in a hotel room with some women he’d met earlier that night. Wayne, 35, appeared to be very drunk and was asleep in most of them, while the girls posed around him in their underwear.
And while there was no suggestion that Wayne had been unfaithful to his long-suffering wife, we’re told Coleen hit the roof when she found out because he’d got himself into such a compromising situation, especially because she was on holiday in Wales at the time with the couple’s four sons, Kai, 11, Klay, eight, Kit, five, and three-year-old Cass.
“Coleen was livid when she saw the pictures and let rip at Wayne,” our source says. “She can’t believe he would be so stupid as to get himself into that situation, and all because he was drunk. She believes Wayne when he said that nothing went on, but she’s still furious with him. Again, it’s the same old story – as soon as she goes away, literally one day later and he’s out all night with anyone he can find. She’s been asking him over and over if there are any other images out there that he needs to be worried about, but he swears there isn’t and that she needs to trust him. But she says he can’t keep doing this to her and something has to change, otherwise their marriage may not survive.”
Wayne – who currently manages Derby County – claims he was set up by the girls, who he had met in a nightclub after his team had lost earlier in the day. While the girls shared the photos on social media, Wayne went to the police claiming he was being blackmailed, though there is no suggestion the girls were involved. The police dropped the case as they were satisfied no offence had taken place and Wayne made a public apology.
“I made a mistake,” he said. “I went to a private party… I’d like to apologise to my family and the club for the images that were going round, and I want to move forward on this. It’s dealt with.” Wayne then bought the copyright for the images, although there is still a video online taken by a fan of him walking back to the hotel with the girls at 5.15am.
But he still has a lot of making up to do with Coleen, who fears his partying is out of control. “Wayne always gets himself into these situations when he’s been drinking and it has to stop,” says the insider. “He insists he doesn’t have a problem, but Coleen wants him to go to rehab – if he can’t handle his drink, then he shouldn’t drink at all. He won’t listen, but she’s being firm and has even threatened divorce if he doesn’t get help. She can’t keep being humiliated like this – she’s just so angry he’s done it again. He never seems to think about her and the kids. They had been in a really good place, but this has set them right back.”

This is not the first time Wayne’s drunken behaviour has threatened their marriage. When Coleen was pregnant with Cass and on holiday with the boys in 2017, Wayne was arrested for drink-driving while taking home party girl Laura Simpson, who he had met in a bar that night. Two years later, while playing in the US, he was arrested for being drunk at Washington airport after a flight, and a few months later, he was pictured going back to a hotel room with two women and a friend following a night out.
When Coleen was pregnant with Kai, it was revealed Wayne’d had threesomes with two sex workers, and he also cheated on her with sex workers when he and Coleen first started going out in 2002. Coleen, 35, has always stuck by him, but has made her feelings known. Following his arrest in 2017, she put up a lengthy post on Facebook, saying she had considered leaving Wayne.
“A few people have been feeling sorry for me, please don’t… I don’t feel sorry for myself. Also a few people are probably thinking [I am] stupid for staying in my marriage. I am not stupid, I know my own mind and it’s something I want to try and work on,” she wrote. “Before the headlines start… no, I’m not taking Wayne back as he’s never left. Yes, it has been a shit time, and yes, time was spent apart, and I thought my marriage might have been at an end…Wayne doesn’t get portrayed for the person he is in the press, he has always had a hard time. I’m not going to list his good qualities as a person as I don’t think he deserves it at this time, but one thing is that he is a brilliant dad. He’s made silly and selfish mistakes, some he’s learnt from, some obviously not. However maybe that will change? One thing I do know is that too much alcohol on a night out is dangerous, and a lot of stupid mistakes are made and things are said under the influence. I would never trust ANYONE who has had a lot of alcohol, it changes some people drastically.”

She ended the post by saying, “If I didn’t [love Wayne], then I wouldn’t be trying to make it work. I know I would be fine on my own, with just me and my children, but I don’t want to live like that. I want to try and continue our marriage and live as a family, because that’s what I want to do. I’m not saying everything is fine and forgotten about, but we are as good as can be at this point, I’m not the type of person to put a show on and say we’re all loved-up… I’m just real.”
But it seems Wayne has yet to learn anything from his previous mistakes and, we’re told Coleen often wonders whether he’s bothered about their marriage. “She thinks he’s pathetic at times and a stupid drunk,” says the source. “She says it’s his own fault if he gets fired from his manager role, and he clearly doesn’t care about anyone else other than himself. She has forgiven him time and time again, as her priority is giving the kids a happy and stable home. But at the same time, she knows they can’t go on like this. Wayne has to take responsibility. Her friends and family are telling her to put her foot down and go through with her threats, because then he may actually start putting some effort into their marriage.”
The insider adds, “She knows she’d be fine on her own, but she would worry even more about what Wayne would get up to. She’s supporting him for now, but there are lots of issues they have to address if they want to get through this.”
