Though they’re all impeccably dressed,, this family is bizarre. The dad, played by Gene Hackman, pretends he’s got cancer so that everyone likes him. The children all used to be prodigies when they were younger, but now they’re in trouble – Chas, played by Ben Stiller, is neurotic and treats his own children like army recruits. Margot, Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, is moody and locks herself in the bathroom for hours so she can smoke. Richie used to play tennis to a high standard, but now he’s in love with Margot...

The Mitchells, Eastenders

 

With infamous brothers Phil and Grant at the forefront of this dodgy east-end family, there’s no way it was going to be anything but dysfunctional. In the past couple of years, we’ve seen Phil develop a crack addiction and cheat on his fiancé, and his son Ben’s turn evil – killing Stella Crawford. And Ronnie Mitchell was at the centre of a very controversial storyline, when her baby died and she decided to replace it with Kat and Alfie’s newborn!

The Gallaghers, Shameless

 

With drunkard Frank at the head of the family, you can expect everything to go wrong. The shambolic family rely on eldest sister Fiona to keep things afloat, and once she escapes, the burden switches to 12-year-old Sister Debbie. There’s sex, drugs, violence, love and a whole lot of scams in this family, making them the UK’s most dysfunctional TV family.

First of all, they’re all yellow, and they never, ever age. Beyond that, dad Homer’s got the mental age of a 12-year-old and is so greedy he needs a gastric bypass. Mum Marge is neurotic and somehow has blue hair, older daughter Lisa is ultra-intelligent but socially unaware, and youngest daughter Maggie only communicates by sucking on her dummy. And son, Bart…well he’s nearly the naughtiest boy in Springfield!
