GALLERY: Our top ten real life couples who've snogged onscreen

Emily VanCamp and Josh Bowman both star in hit US series Revenge. And off-screen, they’re a real life couple, too. They’re hardly the first people to do this, though – so we thought we’d refresh your mind with our favourite on-screen off-screen couples!

Looking back, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez seem an unlikely couple, but they were together for a good two years – that's aaages in Hollywood. They were engaged before their film Gigli came out. The movie – a rom-com about a two-bit gangster who falls in love with a lesbian – completely sank at the box office, and failed critically. It's undoubtedly the worst film of 2003. Bennifer put its failure down to negative publicity surrounding their break-up. They had the opportunity to wow audiences with Maid In Manhattan, but unfortunately that was rubbish as well.

Brad Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston when he started filming Mr and Mrs Smith opposite Angelina Jolie. Although the film wasn’t that great, people still watched it because of the pair’s “thermonuclear screen chemistry”. Something that soon developed off-screen… Brad denied cheating on Jen, but admitted that he “fell in love” with Jolie on set. OUCH! Within a month of Jen filing for divorce, Brad and Ange were papped swanning about (clad in black, of course) on a beach in Kenya. During the summer of 2005, they were confirmed as the fittest couple in existence. They now have a billion children together and are engaged.

Old-school movie director Woody Allen had the right idea when he put Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem into a three-way relationship in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Not only because it got blokes watching a film about two artistic girls on a classy holiday in Europe, but because it brought fellow Spaniards Penelope and Javier together. Though on-screen they were happy to share LOTS with Scarlett’s character, the Oscar winners are intensely private about their real life relationship – they married in a tiny ceremony in the Bahamas in 2010.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman met on the set of Days Of Thunder and were married within a year. They adopted two children together and also appeared in dark and dirty cult film Eyes Wide Shut. But Tom filed for divorce in 2001, with him citing irreconcilable differences. We’re still not 100% sure why they broke up – maybe she resented having to switch from Catholicism to Scientology. Or perhaps she wanted to spend more time in Australia. Or maybe…just maybe… he was fed up of being the short one.

Though Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar had the lions’ share of the chemistry in Cruel Intentions, he was actually married to Reese Witherspoon, who played the virginal debutante in the legendary teen film. In real life, they met at her 21st birthday party, when she cheekily told him “You must be my present”. They had two kids together before splitting in 2006, but they’ll always live on in our memory of Sebastian and Annette, snogging at the top of an escalator.

Jude Law’s turn as the title character in the remake of 60s classic Alfie was critically panned. But because we’d all become so obsessed with style icon Sienna Miller (remember, this was 2003), who played his wildchild girlfriend in the film, we couldn’t help but watch it. They got engaged on Christmas Eve that year, but split for the first time in 2006 after Jude admitted cheating on her with his kids’ nanny. While both working in separate Broadway shows in New York in 2009, they got together again. But they split again two years afterwards.

Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder started going out in 1989 and a year later they played the lead romantic roles in Edward Scissorhands, and he got ‘Winona Forever’ tattooed on his arm. But it wasn’t all roses and, um…tattoos – he came with baggage – he’d previously been engaged to Dirty Dancing's Jennifer Grey and Twin Peaks’ Sherilynn Fenn, and he’d divorced make-up artist Lori Anne Allison. All before his 27th birthday! After a three year engagement, Johnny and Winona broke up, blaming it on media intrusion. He later changed his tattoo to say ‘Wino Forever’.

Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart love to keep their fans guessing about the nature of their relationship. They’ve kept schtum and never confirmed that they’re an item, but after being spotted all around the world together while not on official Twilight duty – they go to each other's movie premieres and are sometimes potted at gigs looking dishevelled in gross baseball caps – it’s clear that they’re more than just friends.
