Ellie Goulding has cleared up exactly what happened with Ed Sheeran and Niall Horan for us. And she’s not happy with some of the rumours flying about.

"I did go on a few dates with Niall, but I was never in a relationship with Ed," she told Elle magazine.

"I have absolutely no idea where that came from and why it was turned into such a big thing."

Well, there you go.

It’s long been circulating that Ed Sheeran wrote Don’t about a relationship he was in with Ellie – cut short by her dates with Niall Horan.

Ed’s song has telling lyrics like:

“And I never saw him as a threat

Until you disappeared with him to have sex of course

It's not like we were both on tour

We were staying on the same f**king hotel floor

And I wasn't looking for a promise or commitment

But it was never just fun and I thought you were different.”

And in October he told The Sun: “The story in Don’t is 100 per cent true. I could have gotten nastier — there was more s**t that I didn’t put in.”

Eep. Well, Ellie says they weren’t ever in a relationship to start with. Over to you, Ed…

She’s also voiced concerns about being defined by the men she has – or hasn’t dated.

"I find it so frustrating… It's something I've talked about with Taylor a lot. She definitely feels that. She gets bothered by it," she told the mag.

"It's like, you can be a great artist, you can write great songs, but the thing that everyone is going to talk about is some relationship they think you have had or not had. It's definitely something we both think happens to female artists over male artists.”

Trust us, Ellie – it’s your music that get our attention first and foremost.
